5 Mistakes People Make Setting Up a Company in Dubai

Most Dubai company setups go wrong in the same five places. Here are the mistakes we see most often, and how to avoid paying for them twice.

We've watched a lot of people set up companies in the UAE. Most of it goes smoothly. But the same handful of mistakes keep coming up, and each one costs money, time, or both. Here are the five worth knowing about before you start.

1. Chasing the cheapest price instead of the right one

The lowest licence isn't always the cheapest company. An Ajman licence at AED 4,888 is a bargain if you sell online or abroad. It's the wrong call if your clients are Dubai corporates who expect a Dubai address on your invoice. Buy for where your customers are, not for the smallest number on the page. Sometimes that's Ajman. Sometimes it's worth paying more.

2. Picking the wrong activity

Your licence covers specific business activities. Pick the wrong one and you either can't legally do what you planned, or you're back paying to amend it later. This trips up more people than anything else. Before you commit, check that the activity you need is actually on the list for the zone you're choosing. If you're not sure, ask. It's a two-minute question that saves a costly fix.

3. Forgetting that visas are the real cost

People compare licence prices and stop there. Then they add a visa and the total jumps. Every residence visa carries its own government fees, medical, Emirates ID, and stamping, and those repeat for each person. If you're bringing a spouse and two staff, price it at four visas from the start. Deciding your visa count late is how a "cheap" setup turns into a surprise.

4. Submitting bad documents

This one is boring and it's the number one cause of delay. A passport scan with a corner cut off. A photo with a busy background. A visa page that's too dark to read. Each one bounces the application back and adds days. Clean, clear scans get you approved fast. Blurry ones don't. It really is that simple.

5. Treating it as a one-off cost

A licence renews every year. So does the office and the visas. None of this is a single payment, and a company you can't afford to renew is worse than no company. Before you set up, make sure the annual running cost fits your budget, not just the first invoice. The setup is the start of a commitment, not the end of one.

The short version

Buy for your customers, get the activity right, price your visas early, send clean documents, and budget for the renewal. Get those five right and most of what goes wrong, won't. If you'd rather have someone check your setup before you pay, that's what we're here for.
